How to start a tent house business in Bihar
What it costs to begin, which goods to buy first, when the money starts coming in, and the mistakes new owners make most often.
Tent work in Bihar never really stops. Weddings, tilak, mundan, shraadh, birthdays, political meetings, school functions — all of them need a pandal and chairs. The work is seasonal, but it does not disappear.
How much capital
Small operations start from the ground, not from a godown. Plenty of people begin with one and a half to two lakh and take only small functions at first.
An opening list usually looks like this:
- Plastic chairs — the fastest-moving item and the quickest to repay its cost
- Round and long tables, with covers
- A waterproof pandal — one good one beats two poor ones
- Lights and wiring — series, halogen, extensions
- Mattress and sheet sets — worth it where baraats stay overnight
Leave utensils, generators and staging for later. They cost a lot and, early on, do not move often enough to pay for themselves.
What to buy first
The rule is simple: whatever goes out to every function comes first. Chairs go everywhere. A stage goes occasionally. In the first year, buy only what leaves the godown at least four times a month.
Second rule: cheap stock is not cheap. A poor chair lasts two seasons, a good one lasts five, and both earn about the same rent.
Working out the return
For any item, ask how many hires it takes to repay its cost.
Say a chair costs ₹350 and rents for ₹15 a function. It repays itself in 24 hires. If it goes out four times a month, the money is back in about six months, and everything after that is profit — less breakage and transport.
Run that calculation on every item. Anything that will not repay itself within two years does not belong in your first purchase.
The mistakes that hurt most
Putting every rupee into stock. Keep cash aside for transport, labour and repairs. In season, labourers want paying daily while your money is still sitting with the customer.
Not tracking dues. In this trade the money arrives after the event. The day you stop knowing exactly who owes you what is the day your profit starts leaking.
Not fixing breakage rates upfront. What a broken chair costs is decided when the booking is taken, not when the goods come back. Decided at return time, it becomes an argument.
Treating transport as free. The vehicle, the diesel and the loading are real costs. Build them into the rate or distant functions will quietly run at a loss.
When the work grows
Past twenty or thirty functions a month, memory stops coping. That is the point where the accounts have to become a system — what is free on which date, who owes what, and what you actually kept at the end of the month. The owners who do this early are the ones who buy a second vehicle and a second godown early.
Common questions
Do I need a licence for a tent house?
Usually a local shop registration, plus GST registration once turnover crosses the threshold. Rules vary by state and municipal body, so confirm once with a local tax consultant.
Which item earns the most?
Usually chairs and pandals, because they go to every function. Expensive items like generators and staging earn more per hire but go out far less often.
When is the season?
In north India the main wedding months run November to March and again April to June. The rest of the year is filled by shraadh, mundan, birthdays and school or government functions.
